Work Authorization (CPT & OPT)
F-1 international students may be eligible for employment in the United States through programs such as Curricular Practical Training (CPT) and Optional Practical Training (OPT). Learn about your options and access resources to help you navigate the authorization process.
ECS does not process OPT or CPT. For official guidance regarding immigration regulations and employment authorization, consult International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS).
CPT
Curricular Practical Training (CPT) may be authorized under certain circumstances to allow F-1 students temporary off-campus employment during the program of study.
OPT
Optional Practical Training (OPT) allows F-1 students to be employed in the United States before or after completion of studies.
CPT (Curricular Practical Training)
What is CPT?
- Available to eligible F-1 students
- Employment must be related to your major
- Authorization is required before starting work
- Used for internships, co-ops, and practical experiences
- 12 months or more of full-time CPT may affect OPT eligibility
CPT Application Process Simplified
- Get the Internship Offer Letter from your employer and communicate with the employer about the CPT process.
- Get approval from your academic program, department, or college. Register for the required course.
- Apply for CPT with ISSS.
- Complete course assignment as required by the end of your internship.
CPT Course Registration
F-1 students are required to register certain courses to be eligible for CPT application.
Undergraduate Students (ENG 310)
Undergraduate students are required to register ENG 310 to apply for CPT and be eligible for an internship. Please refer to the provided link to learn about your steps.

OPT (Optional Practical Training)
What is OPT?
- Available to eligible F-1 students

Provides up to 12 months of work authorization after graduation
- STEM graduates may qualify for a 24-month STEM OPT extension
- Helps students gain professional experience in the U.S.

Students may accrue up to 90 days of unemployment during the initial OPT period
OPT Application Process Simplified
- Plan your date to start application via ISSS. You may apply up to 90 days before your program end date but no later than 60 days after your program end date.
- No Job Offer Letter needed from your employer to start the OPT application.
- Submit an OPT I-20 request e-form through iSTART.
- Submit your application to USCIS after receiving OPT I-20.
- Report your employment to ISSS after you are officially employed.
